As the long summer days slip into autumn, I can’t help but welcome the change in temperature and a shift in attitude. Fall brings about a sense of renewal. It's a time to trade in our swimwear and sandals for boots and cozy layers.
So what do we have to look forward to this season? Down the runway, designers showcased two very opposing themes. We saw glamorous, light, pretty things on one end of the spectrum. And on the opposite end, the collections were angsty, oversized, and tailored. There’s something to satisfy every fashion taste, and mixing the two aesthetics will bring some creativity back to fashion. (the tension between the two makes for intriguing ensembles)
Without further ado, let’s dive deeper into what is on the horizon with 5 of the biggest fall fashion trends for 2022.
1. Head to Toe Leather
Just like florals for spring, leather isn't exactly groundbreaking for fall. We saw the popularity of leather blazers last year. This year leather extends to complete head-to-toe looks. Models at Christian Siriano strutted down the runway in full patent leather, complete with gloves. Alexander McQueen and Khaite added grit to the staple piece by adding buckles, zippers, and studs.
2. Punk Prep
So we’ve seen the return of Y2K fashion, but what about ‘90s grunge? It looks like the angsty punk vibes finally came back on the scene this fall. But there’s a little twist. This time around it's punk meets prep school. At Versace, Alessandra Rich, and Vivienne Westwood, the runway was filled with loud houndstooth and plaid. But don’t let the tailoring and school emblems fool you; it’s still very punk. The heavy metal aesthetic was alive with buckles, spikes, deconstructed sweaters, and chunky platform shoes.. The message is clear: Fall will be the time to embrace the grunge aesthetic.
3. Barbiecore
The upcoming Barbie film featuring Margot Robbie has brought on pink fever. Valentino was fully pink. Shoes, handbags, gowns, and gloves were all a bright fluorescent pink. Even the runway and backdrop were the same shade. While Punk Prep is all about edge, Barbiecore is all about femininity. Aside from the hue, designers also fell head over heels for sequins, feathers, silk, and chiffon. It’s every girly girl’s dream.
4. Visible Lingerie
Who said lingerie is meant to stay in the bedroom? Last fall, we saw corset tops everywhere. This fall, anything and everything from your lingerie drawer can become a part of your wardrobe. Fendi influenced this trend with their sheer gauzy dresses exposing silky lingerie underneath. Dolce & Gabbana also left little to the imagination with visible lace bralettes and panties and garter belts. Lace-trimmed slip dresses also popped up at Burberry. So get creative this fall and see how you can incorporate some of your intimates into your ensembles.
5. Bright Knits
Tired of all the fall neutrals? Then this season is for you! Designers like Emilio Pucci and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini use bold and electric-colored knits to keep a sense of energy and movement alive. Just because it’s getting cold doesn’t mean we have to hibernate. So if you feel like you need a boost in serotonin, throw on a rainbow-knitted poncho.
